Scrap Metal Donations

Steve Johnson (Cottage 179) has graciously agreed to collect the scrap metal put out by our residents and take it to a recycler.  If you have any metals you would like recycled and the proceeds given to the PLCC, please contact Steve at 602-509-0913.  Recycling is one of the many aspects of the Pretty Lake Conservation Club and it is great to see volunteers pitching in and residents supporting a cleaner lake community.

Hog Farm Petition

I received some great news this morning.  Steve Mcelhoe, President of the Lake of the Woods Association and President of the LaGrange County Lakes Association informed me that State Senator Sue Glick informed him that the application for the zoning change to allow a CAFO (Factory Farm hog operation) to be built has been withdrawn!
It is great news but it will be taken with a side of caution since the petitioner could reapply at any time.  Granted they would have to start from scratch and go through the entire process again but it could happen.  As a result, I will continue to participate in the steering committee meetings of the local lake association Presidents to ensure we will be ready to resist again if the application is resubmitted.
Thanks to all who stepped up to get the word out, wrote letters, sent emails and called to protest the CAFO.

Confined Animal Feeding Operation

Dear Residents of Pretty Lake:

We have heard concerns vocalized by a number of Pretty Lake residents about

Noble County proposed rezoning to allow a confined Hog farm just over the

border from LaGrange County south of Big Long Lake. Our President participated

in a conference call with a number of other Lake representatives concerning

this issue.  Attached for everyone’s information are the results of the call

and information in the attachment that can be used in letters / emails to

public officials, namely the Noble County Planning commission, Noble County

Commissioners, Senator Glick and Congressman Denny Zent.

Ron Kantorak sent an email to each official and stated that he is a concerned

citizen, resident of Pretty Lake and the President of the Pretty Lake

Conservation Club.

We are sending this information to you as members of the Pretty Lake

Conservation Club and or Property owners around Pretty Lake so you can be

informed.  You can take any action you deem appropriate in contacting the

officials making or influencing this decision and share your thoughts with

them.

The PLCC Board is not making any financial contribution nor are we making any

recommendations – we are just providing information regarding this proposed

hog farm operation and potential zoning changes.  When the information becomes

available as to where to send individual contributions, if you wish, that

information will be posted on our web site and emailed out.

This is a beautiful recreational area of Big Long Lake, Pretty Lake, Big

Turkey Lake, McClish Lake and Lake of the Woods that we would hate to see it

potentially ruined by a near by Hog Farm.

Please contact the following if you wish to share your thoughts.

1. Email, Noble County Planning Commission planning@nobleco.org, regarding

this CAFO.

2.  A separate bank account will be set up to handle donations for a legal

defense fund,  Information as to how to contribute will follow.

4. A petition form has been distributed and is now hanging on the door knob of

the Pretty Lake Clubhouse for any Residents of Pretty Lake to sign.  Each Lake

made their own decision as to how they would safely obtain signatures.

5. You will then be responsible for alerting your neighbors for signatures,

reminder, only those that are property owners for the areas that are affected

can sign.

6. Attached is the letter that was written by Steve that is being sent to

Proposed Zoning Change Rejected

The LaGrange County Commissioners met this morning and voted on the proposed zoning changes to L-1 regarding auxiliary buildings on back lots. They voted unanimously to reject the proposed changes. Thank you to all the citizens that participated in this government process

Zoning Change Update

As previously mentioned the LaGrange County Planning Commission recently met regarding zoning ordinances they want to change that will greatly restrict what can be built or remodeled on the backlots of the L-1 zones (Lake areas). At that meeting, the Plan Commission approved this against overwhelming opposition of citizens present and letters received. There was no one present in support of the change and still they passed it and sent it to the LaGrange County Commissioners for a vote.  If these changes are approved by the LaGrange County Commissioners and become law, the value of the backlots will be negatively affected.  The County Commissioners are meeting in the Annex Building at 8:30AM on Monday 12/30/2019 to vote on the zoning ordinance changes.  For those opposed, it would be helpful to have a good turnout in attendance at 8:30AM on 12/30/2019

IMMEDIATE ALERT

Detective Faust at the LaGrange County Sheriff’s office contacted the PLCC by phone today.

There have been multiple break ins around Pretty Lake and the surrounding area, including Michigan, Ohio, LaGrange County, Noble County and Allen County.  There are multiple active investigations on going.  There are 13 to 14 agencies involved in the investigation of these crimes.  These thefts are being performed by a large ring of thieves.  As soon as they get caught they bond out and are back stealing again.  They did catch the thieves last night but they will soon bond out and be back on the street.  Last night they stole a trailer and two four wheelers from Bob Burns on the North Shore.

Detective Faust said the suspects are white, travel in a group of 2 to 4 males.  Their plates and vehicles vary all over the map.  They are basically stealing everything and anything that is not secured.  He recommends forming a community watch.  Lock your cars, garages and homes and leave no keys in vehicles of any kind.  The thefts are taking place under the cover of darkness between the hours of 8PM to 6AM.  He said that he needs community help and that if anyone sees anything suspicious that they should call the sheriff’s office immediately and they will send someone out to investigate.

This is much bigger than we first thought and it does not appear to be over yet.

Clearing the discharge

We will be raising the dam at 2PM on Sunday, December 1st.  We will need volunteers in waders with rakes and shovels plus at least two chain saws to clear fallen debris in the discharge channel.
Please come help protect the lake shore from the effects of the winter ice.
